Double Bay Rack Cases: High-Density Mobile Workstations

Twin 19" rack systems in one road case, hand-built in the UK since 1961.

When one rack isn't enough, a Double Bay puts two side-by-side 19" rack frames into a single transit case — the simplest way to move two systems together while keeping them organised, accessible, and protected as one unit. DJs running mixer-and-amp combinations, AV teams moving control and signal racks together, live production crews consolidating processing and power — Double Bay racks are built for the jobs where two pieces of rack equipment travel as one.

Every Double Bay is hand-built in our Market Harborough workshop from 9mm hexa-laminate panels, aircraft-grade aluminium extrusions, and genuine Penn Elcom hardware. Built to standard 19" rack units so your equipment mounts straight in, with removable front and rear lids for full access on the road. Every case is built to order — tell us the U-count you need per bay and your depth requirements, and we'll build it around your gear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Double Bay" mean?

A Double Bay rack houses two independent 19" rack frames side by side inside a single transit case. Each bay takes standard 19" rack-mounted equipment, and both travel together as one unit on the same trolley board — saving truck space and keeping linked systems organised.

What U-sizes do you make Double Bay racks in?

We currently offer Double Bay racks from 12U to 24U as standard, and we can build custom U-counts on request. The U-count refers to the height of each bay — so a 16U Double Bay gives you 16U of rack space in each of the two bays.

Can I have different U-counts in each bay?

Yes — every case is built to order, so if you need (for example) 12U on one side and 8U on the other for asymmetric equipment, we can build it. Tell us what you're housing and we'll spec it.

What's inside the case in terms of fit-out?

Standard Double Bay racks come with two sets of Penn Elcom rack rails (front-mounted as standard, with rear rails available), removable front and rear lids for full access, recessed handles, and castors on the larger sizes. Internal cable routing, foam fittings, or specific accessory layouts can be added on request.

Can I add castors / wheels?

Yes — all our larger Double Bay racks are supplied with castors as standard, including braked castors for stability when loaded. For smaller sizes or if you have a specific castor preference, tell us at quote stage.

How long does it take to build?

Standard lead time is 2-4 weeks from order confirmation, depending on current workshop scheduling and any custom requirements. We'll confirm your build slot when you place the order.
